Moong Dal Chilla Recipe | Healthy Indian Breakfast

Moong Dal Chilla is a nutritious, protein-rich, and delicious Indian breakfast made with ground moong dal (split green gram) and spices. It’s a great alternative to traditional pancakes and can be served with chutney or curd.

Ingredients

• 1 cup yellow moong dal (split green gram)

• ½ cup water (for grinding)

• ½ teaspoon salt (or to taste)

• ½ teaspoon turmeric powder

• ½ teaspoon cumin seeds

• ½ teaspoon red chili powder (optional)

• ½ teaspoon garam masala

• 1 green chili, finely chopped

• ½ inch ginger, grated

• ½ cup coriander leaves, chopped

• ½ cup onion, finely chopped (optional)

• ½ cup grated carrot or capsicum (optional)

• 1-2 tablespoons rice flour (for crispiness)

• Oil or ghee for cooking

Instructions


Step 1: Prepare the Batter

1. Rinse and soak moong dal in water for 3–4 hours. Drain and transfer to a blender.

2. Add water and grind into a smooth, thick batter.

3. Transfer the batter to a bowl and mix in salt, turmeric, cumin seeds, red chili powder, garam masala, green chili, ginger, coriander leaves, and optional vegetables.


Step 2: Cook the Chilla

1. Heat a non-stick pan or tawa on medium flame and grease it with a little oil.

2. Pour a ladleful of batter and spread it evenly in a circular shape.

3. Drizzle some oil around the edges and cook for 2–3 minutes until the base turns golden brown.

4. Flip and cook the other side for another 2 minutes.

5. Repeat for the remaining batter.


Step 3: Serve

1. Serve hot with green chutney, tomato ketchup, or curd.

2. Enjoy a crispy and healthy breakfast!

Tips for the Best Moong Dal Chilla

• Soaking the dal for a few hours makes it easier to blend and digest.

• Add rice flour for extra crispiness.

• Customize with grated veggies for added nutrition.

• Serve immediately for the best taste and texture.
